MaxLiving Betaine HCl provides 750 mg betaine hydrochloride along with pepsin, one of the body’s key protein digesting enzymes in just one capsule.
You may benefit from Betaine HCl if you have occasional bloating and gas, particularly after eating, feel full after eating only a small quantity of food, have infrequent mild indigestion/heartburn, or have bowel irregularities, such as occasional diarrhea and/or constipation.
Betaine HCl combines 750 mg of betaine hydrochloride along with pepsin (a key protein digestive enzyme produced in the stomach). This product is ideal for those who are looking to support their stomach’s digestive function. †
Hydrochloric acid is beneficial for the breakdown of protein for further digestion in the small intestine, the proper absorption of nutrients, including vitamin B12 and minerals such as calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron, and selenium, and a healthy immune system.†
Taking one capsule of Betaine HCl before a meal aids digestion (especially the digestion of protein-containing foods) and helps the body effectively utilize nutrients.

Betaine HCl is an excellent source of hydrochloric acid (HCl), which is required for the breakdown of protein in the stomach for further digestion in the small intestine, the conversion of the proenzyme pepsinogen into pepsin, the proper absorption of nutrients, and protection from pathogens, as the acid provides a protective barrier against bacterial and yeast overgrowth. | ||

Hypochlorhydria, the insufficient production of hydrochloric acid, is a widespread issue. Risk factors for hypochlorhydria include age, high levels of stress, nutrient deficiencies, infections caused by H. pylori. Many people also use medications to reduce stomach acid, which can also lead to hypochlorhydria.
Jonathan Wright, MD, pioneered the theory that low stomach acid – not too much stomach acid, which is conventionally believed – can create acid reflux. He found that when you give people with low stomach acid supplements that contain HCl and pepsin, their condition often improves.
- Insufficient production of HCl may result in inadequate degradation of harmful or opportunistic organisms. This may contribute to bacterial overgrowth or dysbiosis, inflammation and immune overactivation, and increased risk for pneumonia and Clostridium difficile (C. diff) infection
- Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) have been associated with serious side effects, including cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, and dementia.
- Insufficient HCl may lead to poor nutrient status.
- Insufficient HCl may increase the risk for bone fractures.
- Animal studies show that betaine supplementation improves intestinal function.
- One study looked at a 43-year-old female athlete with GI symptoms, including pain. She had complete resolution of refractory lower abdominal pain with daily hydrochloric acid (HCL)/ betaine/ pepsin supplementation.
- Pepsin output declines naturally with age. Likewise, stomach acid production is compromised by several common issues among older individuals. This population may particularly benefit from Betaine HCl.
Other Betaine HCl supplements use tablets. Why do you use capsules?
Capsules ensure delivery of betaine HCl and pepsin to the stomach, where they are needed to initiate digestion.
Can I take more than one Betaine HCl capsule before a meal?
Some individuals may benefit from more than one capsule, especially with a larger meal and/ or meals with higher protein. Warmth and/ or discomfort are signs that you have taken too much Betaine HCl. If that happens, you can neutralize that sensation with one teaspoon of baking soda in water. Always confer with your healthcare practitioner before using this supplement, increasing dosage, and/ or with any discomfort that may arise with use.
Can I take Betaine HCl with my protein powder?
Yes. Betaine HCl assists with digestion and assimilation of nutritional supplements, including protein powders.
