Scientific Support
The thyroid is a very important gland in the endocrine system. The thyroid produces hormones and plays a critical role in regulating metabolism. The hormones secreted by the thyroid gland are thyroxine, also known as T4, and triiodothyronine, also known as T3. These hormones, in turn, regulate metabolism.
Because the hormones T4 and T3 are iodine containing, iodine is required to synthesize these hormones. In fact, thyroid cells are the only cells that have the ability to absorb iodine. This trace element can be found in some foods, however a deficiency can cause unwanted problems in the thyroid. Iodine, along with other nutrients, is very necessary for proper thyroid function.
Iodine deficiency can be linked to hypothyroidism. Iodine is critical to the thyroid because it is required to produce the hormones thyroxine and triiodothyronine. Iodine has been classified as controlling thyroid function. Iodine can be found in foods such as seaweed and cod, but supplementation is often beneficial due to the low amount of foods with sufficient amounts.
Zinc is also needed for optimal thyroid support. A study was conducted on a 28-year-old woman experiencing symptoms of hypothyroidism. Zinc supplementation was found to have a powerful impact on improving the symptoms.
N-Acetyl-L-Tyrosine is a more absorbable form of tyrosine. Tyrosine can help to produce dopamine, which is known as a “feel good” hormone. This can be beneficial to assist with improving symptoms of depression. Tyrosine is also directly involved in the production of thyroxine.
Selenium helps the body to convert thyroxine to the more active form, triiodothyronine. Studies have shown that selenium may prevent thyroid disease.
In a study conducted on 84 healthy women between the ages of 17 and 50, Vitamin A was shown to reduce Serum TSH concentrations, therefore possibly reducing the risk of hypothyroidism.
